Pillow or not to pillow ... that is the question
On our previous trip I scoffed at Bax for packing two pillows. I compromised and took them along anyway because we were just on a one night camping trip to Smithers and we had the room. I realized quickly that one pillow was useful to sit on (before your butt rattles off your bones) or roll it and jam it between us to provide support to the lower back. I think that is the difference when trying to figure out what you need to pack. When you drive in a "cage", space isn't as high a priority. To pack something you just need one purpose to bring it. Comfort for the trip is high on the priority list. When you are in a motorcyle you need to have several reasons to pack the same object. So while one would never pack a pillow for sleeping, if you can string it together for the above reasons it ends up getting packed. The only problem is I have justified having one pillow but can't rationalize the need for two. So Bax get's the pillow and I try to fashion one out of miscellaneous clothing items which works when the clothes are relatively clean but get's progressively more challenging as the trip wears on and we don't take the time to go to a laundramat.
